[Introduction]
In this small Pv analysis I'll start by talking about the Photography which was the first thing that caught my attention. After that, I'll talk a little about the Narrative, finishing with a Conclusion where I'll put together the aspects I found about the Photography, Narrative and the music lyrics.
This is my first Pv analysis so it's possible that the next one will be more complex and with other presentation models. I also apologize for any English mistakes.
[Photography]
We just need to watch the first images of this video to understand it will transmit feelings of sadness, melancholy, loss, despair or even some kind of death wish, fatigue. All this given by the "colorless", dead, emotionless, grey and brown colors.
The lack of life is such that sometimes the characters' clothes get mixed with the surrounding colors of the Nature, as if they were one. The Nature appears naked and dead as they are, in a certain way.
[Narrative]
As the video starts we are confronted with some kind of abandoned World, deserted and lifeless. The first human being we see in this strange environment is a baby, awakening as the guitar wakes up.
We continue with the vast desert where an adult figure appears, dressed with some sort of rags. An old piece of clothing, colorless, in harmony with the surroundings.
Figure after figure, we have a total of four male characters, all dressing alike, meeting around a straw cradle, simple and equally poor, which is right in front of a corpse. Inside it we see the baby from the beginning of the video, naked, unprotected and alone, abandoned in the middle of nothing.
The calm and tranquility are replaced by a stronger beat, bringing the corpse with it. Not any corpse but a skeleton, also dressed in simple clothes and which was probably guarding the child.
With the vocalist's scream come the baby's cry, whose cradle is knocked down, leaving him in the ground and making him crawl in front. Curiously he falls far from the skeleton, maybe trying to escape it.
One by one the characters start leaving, there is nothing else to see.
The music returns to its tranquility, almost as in a sudden disregard or just created by fatigue. Only one of them remains with the baby, maybe to take care of him or perhaps to watch him a while longer, curious to know his Future. Nonetheless we watch him walking away, showing he has also left him.
[Message]
The lyrics start by talking about something that was just born. White, pure, not having any knowledge of what surrounds him. As we grow up people start to choose our path for us and eventually "the colors start fading", as they faded in the video.
Eventually Humans end up destroying one another, it's what the next quatrains says. And more than destroying one another, they destroy Mother Nature which has been alive for billions of years (of which we are just a few seconds). Probably that's what happened to the surrounding Nature, killed by the beings she saw grow and whom she takes care of without asking much. Instead of her "children" taking care of her they simply incessantly look for destruction, ruining any chance of a better, colorful and lively Future.
Even if Man would want a different Future, it will always be destroyed, in a sort of vicious cycle. A breaking World. A search for something that doesn't exist, based on a selfish and apocalyptic desire that will only turn us on skeletons left in the desert.
Maybe in another perspective, the baby's nudity could represent that whiteness which awaits being colored, not knowing that that will never happen and that he will live his life in tones of grey. Perhaps the characters met the child hoping that he would be different, that we would have a different Future. Nevertheless, this doesn't happen and they quickly give up, returning to their path.
We can read the ending in two ways. Eventually the character who remains with the baby may have also lost hope that something were to change. Or. The fact that the child had some company and support, even if only for a brief moment, may be a signal that there is still hope for him.
Although the World and its people are walking to the end, there is still hope that one day someone manages to get out of this cycle, changing our destiny. We can only wait that he keeps walking ahead, not becoming a corpse, which gets on fire in the end of the video, maybe in a metaphor of the Phoenix.
The music ends with a phrase "The end is near by but you who have known love will be alright".
